Monarch Hall, an independent living program for adults with autism, includes seven efficiency apartments each with its own bathroom and kitchenette. The residence, completed in late 2010, is outfitted with sensory and experiential features including soft lighting, clear pathways, and a common area for group activities. The program focuses on developing communication and life skills so that residents can learn to become better functioning. Residents will receive vocational training, life skills instruction, and the opportunity to participate in social/recreational programs and community outings.
A resident's goals may range widely from finding independent employment; to working at a job in the community with a coach; or maintaining a job on the Bellefaire JCB campus. Daily schedules may include exercise; instruction in food preparation; computer literacy training; apartment cleaning.
What makes it unique
Our small staff-to-resident ratio affords residents the engagement and attention necessary, so that they can make larger strides in shorter periods of time.
Program components include aspects not typically found at other residential treatment centers for those with Autism Spectrum Disorder. They include:
- A highly structured day.
- Continual data collection, with results folded back into the treatment plan.
- A focus on controlling environmental stressors.
- The ability to meet the needs of those who are non-verbal, across the spectrum, to those with highly-functioning Asperger's syndrome.
- The use of technology, such as SMART Boards and digital media.
Residents can elect to stay with the program on a lifelong basis, or until such time when alternative or more intensive services may be required.
